The raucous art/noise punk band, Tea Eater (feat. members of Gustaf, Baby AcidSharkmuffin and more), just wrapped up a four week residency at The Broadway which featured them playing once a week in January with a rotating cast of other bands and special guests. Their songs are a hell of a lot of fun and in the vein of noise punk more so than the post punk and punchy syncopated riffs that are a hallmark of Gustaf, the main project of singer/guitarist Tarra Theissen and guitarist Vram Kherlopian.

The sarcasm and sardonic wit of the lyrics is certainly shared by both projects though and the snotty gems of “I’m Starting A Podcast,” “Fuck The DMV,” and “Whatever” are punk rock solid gold! As of now, only one song is on their Bandcamp, but that is soon to change as the band told me after the show that they will be recording some tracks in early February. Joyous news indeed! They will also embark on their first mini tour this coming weekend.

For the dedicated fans who made it out to all the shows of the residency, they could bring their official Tea Eater punch cards to receive a prize at the conclusion of the last show and, as much as I wanted to be among the recipients of a coupon for a free boat, life and other things prevented me from going to any of the shows until the final night. Damnit! Next time though, I’m getting that punk rock yacht! Drummer Abdon Valdez got a trophy of his own for playing all four shows with the band as well as two other bands, Tight Lips (who played week one) and Safer (who played week two), well deserving of the prize to pull off that many sets, drummers for the win! (No I’m not biased at all, I don’t play drums, I don’t know what you’re talking about…)

For the final show, Tea Eater was joined by three other Brooklyn locals: experimental shoegazers, Nara’s Room, who reminded me of a bit of a more laid back Hum (who I absolutely love), alt-twee indie rockers Modern Flame who were playing their first show with new guitarist, Tui Jordan, and Namesake the jangly indie dream punkers who closed the show with a high energy set. All in all, not a bad way to spend a Monday (or any) night in Brooklyn. Keep your eyes and ears on these bands around town, you won’t be sorry.
