Any day I get to see Spite Fuxxx tear the stage apart is a damn good day. I was long overdue to see them because I’ve been so busy the last few months so I missed several of their shows. Suffice it to say that I was BEYOND ready for a face ripping from them and they did not disappoint. They came out strong and played a bunch of my favorites and nailed the hits like “Eat The Rich,” and an absolutely stellar cover of the Dolly Parton classic “9 to5.” Much to my delight they also played some brand new material which I was very excited to hear. Word has it that a full length is on the horizon from them and that is the most joyous news I’ve gotten in a while!
But the most exciting moment of the night wasn’t even purely the music, but the fact that singer MG Stillwaggon’s little sister was there at her very first punk show ever AND she crowd surfed. (See below because of course I captured all the action.) I’m all about spreading the punk love and life to the younger generation so it was very fun seeing someone experience it for the first time at around the same age I was when I started going to shows in the 90s.
As for the rest of the bill, it was a very mixed bill in terms of style. I unfortunately missed the first performer, Cameron Castan, but made it just in time for Heavy Halo, a heavy industrial electro goth duo (think Pretty Hate Machine meets Depeche Mode) and Jelly Kelly, the first time I’ve seen prog rock melded with jangle pop meets post punk. The drums got a little busy for my taste at times, but I liken that to the proggy overtones and overall this band had a strong showing so I’m looking forward to seeing them again.
Punk fucking rock man, love it, can’t live without it.

girl in red at Brooklyn Steel (photo by Kate Hoos)
Ah, to be young again. I can’t go back, but I can feel a little bit of that fresh-faced excitement when I listen to young singer songwriters like Marie Ulven aka girl in red. And to really recapture a bit of my youth and the feelings I had when I went to my first big queer/queer adjacent events (Sleater Kinney, May 1999 if anyone was wondering), I just needed to be in the midst of the crowd on the first of two sold out nights at Brooklyn Steel. The energy and exuberance was radiating out of every single fan in that room, a palpable feeling of youthful wonder and queer joy everywhere you turned.
Music like this is what I craved when I was a teenager and in my early 20s, living in a world that had just recently begun to heal from Matthew Shepard’s murder (something that profoundly affected me at the time but that I couldn’t find the words to talk about until well into my 30s) and was not quite ready for such bold, open and unabashed queerness as the norm with no one batting an eye over it. (Yes, I know plenty of people in certain parts of this country and the world still bat an eye, but that’s why artists like this and these nights are so important.)
My original plans to be in the photo pit then fade to the back changed and I ended up having to improvise with my point and shoot camera and phone from within the crowd, but I see now that this was the only way to really get the full experience, feel the excitement and yes, maybe even feel a little bit young again. I found queer punk at a pretty early age and for that I’m forever grateful, but it gave me an outlet that was more political than personal, and I didn’t always have a place for my feelings of yearning and heartbreak when I was younger other than through straight artists that I creatively re-imagined lyrics by.
Like many LGBT folks who are now middle aged, I didn’t get to experience a major artist singing so boldy and specifically about her queerness, writing songs about things I could directly relate to. The political statements were great and I’m thankful I learned so much from them, but a lot of times I just wanted love songs very clearly from one girl to another, and not having to pretend in secret or hide the records on my shelves. I’m so beyond happy that these younger fans have this outlet now, a mirror for their feelings and songs they can sing along to without having to hide how they feel or change pronouns; they can just be themselves right out in the open, the way it should have always been.

Ulven is a great songwriter who has a knack for crafting deeply personal indie pop earworms, leaning even more into her pop sensibilities and honing her production skills on her debut album if i could make it go quiet. The set was comprised of almost the entirety of the album, but included many of her earlier songs also, the ones that helped establish not only her fanbase but her song writing prowess. The early songs like “we fell in love in october,” “girls,” “bad idea!” and “dead girl in the pool.” have amassed huge play counts on Spotify etc and it was exciting to get to hear them live and fleshed out as they are from a more lo-fi place and were recorded by Ulven alone. (This era of her music was also compared to C86 by The Guardian which I actually had never thought of before but think is super spot on.) The only thing I can say I was surprised by was the omission of “summer depression.”
And while I knew she’s a fantastic songwriter, I also learned how strong a performer she is seeing her in person. (Previously I had only seen her KEXP live session so I went in not really having a huge frame of reference of what to expect.) She goes hard and though she plays music more on the pop end of the spectrum, she has the energy and presence of some of the best hardcore front people or hell, an entire punk band, bursting out of her. She really made the songs come alive and never seemed to stay still for a single moment, running and jumping all over the place for the entire set (ah yes, to be young again!) with a zeal that was infectious and beaming out across the room. She had plenty of witty, funny and endearing stage banter between songs too, engaging with fans throughout the entire performance.
And speaking of the fans, it seems very clear that she genuinely cares about them based on her back and forth with the crowd throughout the night. She interacted often with them, answering their calls to her and reading off the various signs being held up saying, “I love them, keep them coming,” taking a phone to shoot a video from stage, and even inviting one fan up to play guitar on “i’ll die anyway” (after said fan held up a sign asking to play).

During “bad idea!” she stopped the song immediately upon seeing someone was in distress and when the fan gave the okay, she started the band back up again only for the fan to signal once more so the song stopped again. Once all was confirmed well, the song kicked back in and Ulven took a leap off the barrier to crowd surf…which didn’t quite end as well as she hoped it would because she went down pretty quickly (though was unhurt) rather than riding the full wave towards the middle of the room. She finished the song from the crowd and started a tender mosh pit in the process (I say “tender” because I have been in some borderline violent pits in my day and this was the total opposite). After the song was done she immediately, but lovingly, sassed the crowd for not catching her, declaring “I said give me your hands not your phones!” as many of the fans were filming in front and too distracted to catch a crowd surfer (I was a few people back so was not in range to catch her), but all was well and all was love when she was lifted over the barrier to return to the stage to finish the rest of the set.
No matter the song or era, every fan sang along word for word to each and every song, a level of dedication I don’t often see even in the most ardent of fans at the shows I generally find myself at. I think that is a testament to how honest and raw her lyrics are. (Ulven has stated she does not like the description “vulnerable.”) She paints the full picture and doesn’t hold back; her fans connect deeply to that. And again, the fact that they can see themselves, their lives, and most importantly, their feelings, reflected in her words is what makes them so devoted to her.

From night two, where the stage diving went slightly better.
Also from night two
Between work and this blog, I go to shows almost every single night of the week (26 shows by the time March is over). Many of them fade to the back of my mind afterwards and others stick around longer but don’t make a deeper lasting impression. This show was not one of those nights; I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I left the venue. I can’t recapture my youth and I can’t go back to tell the weird little baby queer I was to not be so sad and angsty because something much better is coming later on down the line, but I can be incredibly thankful that we have all come so far and that we can gather together in moments of fun and joy, the purest act of resistance to the pain of this world that exists. It’s easy to feel jaded and there’s plenty of sadness/hurt to go around for all of us. But to be amongst a primarily queer crowd at a sold out show, being uncompromisingly themselves and singing along to someone who really speaks to them, to all of us, was a reminder of why I’m still here, why I never gave up even when I really wanted to. Truly a gift I didn’t know I needed.

Snapped Ankles at Baby’s All Right (photo by Kate Hoos)
I’m a big proponent of Wednesday night shows, the perfect midweek pick me up from the bullshit of real life if you ask me. And if you want a really good pick me up, then a band like Snapped Ankles is who you need to see. Making their US “maiden voyage” (or “first contamination” according to lead singer Austin from stage), they hit NYC on their way to SXSW and put on a spellbinding show. There’s a lot going on in both their music and their live performance and there’s really no other way to describe them other than weird….but weird is how I live and breathe in this world and what I thrive on so I was in pure heaven. But first, let’s hit upon the openers of the show, Gloin, who were a wonderful surprise.
I’m always on time for shows, not only to secure a good shooting spot, but because despite going to shows for more than 25 years of my life now, I’m still not (that) jaded and a pretty big nerd so I really like to see the openers. I’m glad it’s a habit I have stuck by because I’ve discovered some incredible bands over the years, Gloin being a perfect example of this. I had not even heard of them until the morning of the show when I checked into who the opener was going to be. I put them on in the car while driving around for my second job and was immediately enthralled. Soaked with hazy synths and reverb, their sound is heavy and bombastic at times, slinkier and more lilting at others. And while the firm influence from noise rock and post punk is evident, they still craft a sound that is unique to them. They are based in Toronto which isn’t all that far, but it feels far enough, and I am hoping it won’t be too long before they can make their return to the States.
And then there was Snapped Ankles. Oh how I love Snapped Ankles and that love was made even deeper after finally getting to see them live. And while I say there’s no other way to describe them than “weird,” that somehow doesn’t feel right either because there are many other terms you can ascribe to them that each feel in some way fitting. The easiest comparisons are of course to Krautrock and other motorik, dance driven genres like post punk. There are also currents of noise and synth punk and some kind of strange hybrid glitch jazz all at the same time. (I don’t even think “glitch jazz” is a real genre/term. I certainly do not mean acid jazz either because that is a very distinct thing and they are not that. And perhaps it is just me, but I do hear and feel clear elements of some kind of distorted jazz influence in their sound.)
This being the bands first foray to the States, they were met with a not quite sold out venue, but still a pretty decent sized crowd for that room. And every single person there was in rapt attention and an established fan of the band; it was clear that just about everyone came to dance (I even got into it and I notoriously doooo noooot dance). And dance they did while the band grooved through their set dressed in ghillie masks and jumpsuits which certainly made for interesting stage attire (with some serious Yellowjackets cult like vibes). The set was peppered with the bounciest songs from 2019’s Stunning Luxury and 2021’s Forest of Your Problems plus a few odds and ends including their latest single “BBQ In Brazil,” which is not a song about food as it may first appear, but rather social commentary on luxury travel and “instaconsumerism.” (I’ve also wondered if this may also have undertones of vitriol against the vile Bolsonaro regime and the practice burning the rainforests to create farm and cattle grazing land, irreparably damaging ecosystems and ancient growth in the name of capitalism. That was my interpretation but it does seem right in line with the band’s politics and themes.)

As there was no late show at the venue, the band didn’t seem to adhere to the strict structure of the songs as they are recorded and extended and ran many of them together to stretch out the set. Band leader/singer Austin was in and out of the crowd several times while the rest of the band remained steadfast, locking in with the various samples and loops, melding mesmerizing bass lines perfectly in time with various synths, drums and the clank of tree branches outfitted with triggers and attached to effects pedals routed to synths. At the very end of their set, as they exited the stage, they left several of the loops playing as the crowd yelled in vain for more; the band did not return for an encore. As the crowd began to disperse, the sound tech came up to figure out where to turn the gear off, and somehow managed to turn the percussion loop off first, leaving an eerie vocal loop playing for several moments longer making for one of the most fitting ends I could have hoped for from this night.
Snapped Ankles is truly a sight and sound to behold. And I’m confident as they become more known in the States, it really is only a matter of time before they are commanding audiences from much larger stages here.
Snapped Ankles is responsible for one of the best and most interesting takes on Fugazi I have ever heard. Their version of “Give Me The Cure,” came out last October on a comp called Silence Is A Dangerous Sound on Ripcord Records and it is a drastic reworking of the seminal track from 13 Songs. I highly recommend the rest of the comp as well, as it is packed full of artists doing their own takes on the legendary band, but this was a major stand out for me.

Surfbort at Market Hotel (photo by Kate Hoos)
Who here among us doesn’t love a punk show? You’ll never catch me saying “not me” to that question and so you won’t be surprised to know I was thrilled to be at this show, packed from top to bottom with heavy hitters. I always seem to find myself at Surfbort shows in the middle of the winter and they always warm up my heart when nothing else seems to crack the icy veneer enshrouding it.
Energetic garage punks Dog Date took the stage first, setting a fever pitch right from the get-go with their song “Frog.” As their dual drummers smashed and bashed through the quarter note triplets at the mid point of the song, the audience was snared, ready to party hard for the rest of the night. Having only recently seen them for the first time (see pics here), I was doubly thrilled to find out they were on this bill. (I never want to miss any of their shows ever again in fact but alas, adulting must happen and so I will take what I can get.)
Pussy Gillette took the stage next and brought the tempo down a notch with a set of smoldering garage. Lead singer/bassist Masani Camacho telling the audience at one point “If you’re a sad motherfucker, this one’s for you baby!” I don’t know about anyone else, but I felt seen in that moment. Their special brand of old school punk swagger was the perfect counter point of the hyper fuzz of Dog Date, both garage acts but on different ends of the spectrum. Camacho also had the very best iteration of “see us in the back for merch” that I’ve ever heard, declaring “You can’t buy our record at Wal-Mart so come see me at the merch table suckas!”
Experimental no wave outfit cumgirl8 were in the direct support spot and played a set of raw goth twinged post punk, pulling from their 2020 self titled debut and 2021’s RIPcumgirl8. They perfectly blend crunchy with groovy for a mesmerizing and unique sound. At the very end of their set, on the brink of coming undone, they asked “is there time for one more?” before putting down their instruments and completely changing things up, playing a several minutes long glitchy techno rave outro, complete with a toy keyboard in the mix.

cumgirl8 at Market Hotel
By the time Surfbort took the stage, the room had grown hot and steamy, and the crowd was right on the edge of erupting into chaos. And when the first notes rang out, erupt they did, a pure frenzy ensuing for much of the next hour. Bodies flying, lyrics lovingly shouted back and forth from singer Dani Miller to the crowd and from the crowd back to her, the band raging on stage behind her, there’s no other way to go than hard when in the midst of Surfbort.
This was my first time seeing them in the “after times,” and as such the first time with their new five piece lineup. The songs sounded as tight as ever and the tempos even punchier than I remember from the last time I saw them in 2019. They pulled largely from their kickass 2021 album Keep On Truckin’ but they also pulled out some classics like “Slushy,” “Bedbugs,” and “ACAB,” along with two personal favs, “Les Be In Love,” and “Hippie Vomit Inhaler.”
Times in 2022 are weird and fucking hard, but nights like these are what make me want to keep going. Afterall, there’s nothing quite like the rowdy shenanigans of a Surfbort show, and paired with three smoking openers, from start to finish this was one for the books AND the soul.

Flyer designed by Kate Bell (of Creek and Kills)
FTA is hosting our very first benefit show on Saturday April 2nd at Wonderville in Brooklyn. We went all out and made it a cover show featuring local musicians pretending to be The Ramones, Babes In Toyland (featuring yours truly on drums and FTA contributor Chantal on guitar/vocals), and Tina Turner. Yes you read that lineup right! You will never see that lineup happen except in the fantasy realm of a video arcade in Brooklyn so why not come on out and help raise money to keep this humble blog afloat??? It’s going to be a very fun night and we will be holding a raffle for some cool prizes (keep an eye on our social media for what we have to offer).
This fundraiser is to help bring in money to cover hosting and other expenses because if you haven’t noticed, the platform is currently ad free. I would like to keep it that way as long as possible, but it is not a free venture for me and has thus far been financed directly from my own personal money. I do love doing this first and foremost, and did not start this as a money making venture per se, but to be able to get some revenue coming in to cover expenses and maybe even eventually pay myself and the contributors is an exciting prospect. We won’t get there entirely from one benefit show, but every bit does help. There may come a time when ads become something that has to happen, but for now, I’d like to go a little old school and a little bit more punk rock and try some fundraising that way. There is nothing more classic than a benefit show so here we are!
The show is no cover (except for the songs!), so no one turned away for lack of funds, but we will be passing the hat for donations throughout the night and as mentioned, there will be a raffle for some pretty sweet prizes including a $50 Sam Ash Giftcard and merch bundles. We also have a donation button here on the site for anyone who is unable to attend the show but would like to make a contribution anyway. You’ll be helping this nerdy operation keep going and will be immensely appreciated! (Just scroll all the way down to find said donation button.)
Now go ahead and get yourself in the mood with a few songs you’ll get to sing along to at the show:
Featuring Maria Lina from Frida Kill as the legendary Ms. Turner.
If you’re ready to get screamed at AND see me smash the toms a lot, then this set is for you!
Featuring Queens punk Jessie Rodriguez (of The Loneliers and Jekssaira) fronting these iconic Queens punks.
